El Porteño Empanadas was started by Joseph Ahearne in 2008, combining his mother's empanada recipe with pastry techniques from his sister, who trained as a pastry chef in France. They began selling empanadas at farmers' markets and food trucks, now operating locations in San Francisco's Ferry Building and Napa Valley's Oxbow Public Market, sourcing ingredients from local farms such as Far West Fungi, Keller's Crafted Meats, and Central Milling.
